6160-08 City & Guilds, Rescue & Recovery

Level 3 award in emergency rescue & recovery of casualties from confined spaces.

This 2-day Level 3 qualification is designed for those who may be involved in rescue and recovery operations from confined spaces. It provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to be prepared for carrying out safe, timely, and effective rescues using the appropriate equipment and procedures should an emergency arise. This course is aimed at personnel who may be required to lead or participate in emergency or rescue operations in confined spaces.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the legal, operational, and safety requirements related to confined space rescue

  • Prepare and inspect rescue equipment, breathing apparatus, and communications tools

  • Perform safe entry, casualty location, treatment, and evacuation

  • Use appropriate casualty handling techniques and rescue systems

  • Coordinate with other team members during rescue operations

  • Manage post-rescue procedures including debrief and equipment checks


Course Content:

  • Legal framework: Confined Spaces Regulations NI 1999, Health and Safety at Work Order

  • Risk assessment, rescue plans, and safe systems of work

  • Types of confined spaces and associated hazards

  • Emergency entry and casualty extraction techniques

  • Use of stretchers, tripods, winches, and recovery systems

  • Use of full working breathing apparatus

  • Safe team movement and casualty handling

  • Communication protocols during rescue

  • Practical rescue simulations in realistic confined space scenarios


Candidates will be assessed by:

  • Practical Assessment: Candidates must demonstrate safe and effective casualty rescue in a simulated confined space environment.

  • Written Exam: To assess understanding of regulations, risks, rescue techniques, and emergency protocols.


Upon successful completion, candidates receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from Confined Spaces (6160-08), valid for 3 years

  • City & Guilds photo ID card


Course Prerequisites:

  • Candidates must be medically fit to undertake the training and will be asked to self-certify during the induction.

  • Candidates must not exceed 140kg (22 stones) weight limit for the fall protection equipment used.

  • Basic English literacy skills for written and verbal assessments.
