Level 3 Award in Entry Control and Arrangements for Confined Spaces (High Risk).
This 2-day Level 3 qualification reflects the National Occupational Standard for the Entry Controller (Top Person) responsible for high-risk confined space entry operations. It equips candidates with the knowledge and skills to plan, control, supervise, and manage entry into high-risk confined spaces, without entering the spaces themselves.
Course Overview:
Oversee entry and exit procedures for high-risk confined spaces
Monitor teams during confined space operations
Control emergency response without physically entering the space.
Course Aims & Objectives:
Implement safe working procedures and team coordination in high-risk confined spaces
Control entry and exit processes, monitor atmospheric conditions, and maintain documentation
Monitor team activity to enforce compliance and swiftly address unsafe behaviours
Initiate and manage emergency procedures effectively
Understand relevant health, safety, and environmental legislation
Appreciate standard protocols for confined space classification, risk assessment, communication, and decontamination
Carry out proper equipment checks and testing—including escape and emergency gear, ventilation systems, and communications tools.
Candidates will be assessed by:
Practical observation of entry control and emergency response
Short-answer written assessment to test understanding of legislation, protocols, and procedures.
Upon successful completion, candidates receive:
A City & Guilds Level 3 certificate valid for three years
A City & Guilds photo ID card
Course prerequisites:
Minimum age: 16–18 (varies by provider)
Medically fit, capable of managing breathing apparatus, wearing harnesses (typically weight limit of 136 kg/140 kg)
Basic literacy in English (assessments conducted in English only, per City & Guilds policy)
