6160-03 City & Guilds, High Risk

A Level 2 award for those working in high risk confined spaces.

This qualification is designed for individuals who work in high-risk confined spaces where access and working conditions are difficult, and where there may be significant risks that cannot be mitigated. The 6160-03 equips learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to safely enter, work in, and exit high-risk confined spaces, including the use of full duration breathing apparatus.

This course is suitable for:

  • Operatives who need to work in high-risk confined spaces

  • Individuals using breathing apparatus during confined space entry

  • Workers in sectors such as utilities, wastewater, construction, petrochemicals, or manufacturing

  • Anyone identified as needing this training through a confined space risk assessment


Course Objectives:

  • Understand relevant legislation and confined space classifications

  • Prepare equipment and PPE for high-risk confined space entry

  • Safely enter and work in high-risk confined spaces using breathing apparatus

  • Use and maintain communication systems and atmosphere monitoring equipment

  • Understand and act in line with emergency procedures

  • Exit the space safely and debrief accordingly


Course Content:

  • Definitions and classifications of confined spaces (low, medium, high risk)

  • Legal and regulatory frameworks (Confined Spaces Regulations NI 1999, HASAWO 1978)

  • Hazard identification and control measures

  • Use of full working breathing apparatus

  • Introduction to Air-line breathing equipment

  • Atmospheric testing and monitoring

  • Use of rescue equipment and PPE

  • Communication and monitoring procedures

  • Emergency evacuation drills

  • Practical confined space entry and exit using BA in simulated conditions


Assessment Method:

  • Practical Assessment: Candidates will complete a simulated high-risk confined space entry using full breathing apparatus

  • Written Exam: Short answer questions to assess theoretical knowledge and understanding


Successful candidates receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Working in High Risk Confined Spaces (6160-03) Valid for 3 years

  • City & Guilds photo ID card 


Course Prerequisites:

  • Candidates must be medically fit to undertake the training and will be asked to self-certify during the induction.

  • Candidates must not exceed 140kg (22 stones) weight limit of the fall protection equipment used.

  • Basic English literacy skills for written and verbal assessments.
