6160-01 City & Guilds, Low Risk

This is a Level 2 award for those working in low risk confined spaces.

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for individuals working in low risk confined spaces where there is adequate natural or mechanical ventilation, and where access is simple and unobstructed. It provides essential knowledge and practical training to ensure safe entry, work, and exit from low risk confined spaces, following approved procedures and safety regulations.

This course is intended for:

  • Workers who need to enter and work in low risk confined spaces

  • Operatives in industries such as water, construction, utility, maintenance, and telecommunications

  • Anyone required to demonstrate competence in confined space working for compliance or contractual reasons


Course objectives:

  • Understand legislation, regulations, and organisational procedures relating to confined spaces

  • Prepare for entry to a low risk confined space

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools safely and correctly

  • Safely enter and exit confined spaces

  • Work safely within the space using appropriate communication methods

  • Deal with emergencies using basic procedures


Course Content:

  • Introduction to confined spaces and associated risks

  • Health and safety legislation (eg. Confined Spaces Regulations NI 1999)

  • Risk assessments and safe systems of work

  • Use of gas detection equipment

  • Selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Communication systems

  • Emergency procedures and escape techniques

  • Practical training in entering and exiting a simulated confined space


Candidates will be assed by:

  • Practical Assessment, a demonstration of safe confined space entry and exit in a controlled environment.

  • Written Exam, short-answer questions assessing their understanding of theory and regulations.


On successful completion, learners receive:

  • City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Working in Low Risk Confined Spaces (6160-01), valid for 3 years.

  • City & Guilds photo ID card.


Course Prerequisites:

  • Candidates must be medically fit to undertake the training and will be asked to self-certify during the induction.

  • Candidates must not exceed 140kg (22 stones) weight limit for the fall protection equipment used.

  • Basic English literacy skills for written and verbal assessments.
